While giving feedback to your employees could feel like a daunting task that may end poorly, it is actually a valuable tool to increase productivity, employee morale, and work performance.

However, delivering this information can be done two ways:

The Different Types of Feedback in the Workplace

There are two different types of feedback in the workplace, and it is important to recognize them before their delivery.

The first is instructional, which revolves around information that dictates expectations or teaching a new behavior. On the other hand, motivational feedback serves as a reward or promises the potential of a future reward.

Both types of feedback are equally important in the workplace, so one should not be favored over the other.

Positive Feedback vs. Criticism

While you may think that you should shy away from delivering negative feedback to your employees, sometimes it is completely necessary to aid in improvement and performance.

The Harvard Business Review conducted a survey that showed employees reacted to negative feedback six times more strongly than they reacted to positive feedback from their boss.

Furthermore, the survey results showed that the negative feedback could contribute to a loss of employee morale and productivity.

However, there are ways to deliver criticism that make it more effective. The first tactic is to always convey this information “privately”. Doing it in front of other employees could lead to embarrassment and further reduced morale.

Another tip for delivering feedback is to ask for “permission” before giving it. Opening the conversation with, “Is it ok if I provide you with some feedback?” assures that you are not ambushing your employee or taking them by surprise.

It also allows them a moment to emotionally prepare themselves for what you are about to say.

On the flip side of criticism is, of course, positive reinforcement. Unlike the delivery of negative feedback, this information should be given publicly in front of other employees.

This is very motivating not just to the employee receiving it but those around them, who will begin to crave the same positive and public assessment.
